Brett Steven, Dr Fusion, McMo, PJ, Electrovernacular · 70 tracks played

The air on October 5th felt like a slow burn, steadily heating up across the Point Blank airwaves, a testament to the station’s unwavering commitment to the deeper end of the spectrum. No hype, just the kind of considered programming that separates the serious from the merely trendy.

Brett Steven kicked off his show with a deep dive into the warm currents of soul and R&B, gently easing listeners in with the smooth grooves of Young Pulse’s "Back for More" before pulling out a timeless classic like Barry White’s "September When I First Met You." It was a masterclass in setting a mood, moving through the sophisticated shimmer of October London and the intricate harmonies of Lalah Hathaway. The set then stretched out into a broader landscape of funk and disco, with firefly and Alexander O'Neal paving the way for the undeniable energy of The Jacksons' "Walk Right Now (7" Version)." As the hours progressed, Steven skillfully navigated into jazz-funk and Latin-infused territories, a particular highlight being the percussive fire of Francisco Aguabella’s "Ramon's Desire," a track that spoke volumes about rhythmic sophistication. He rounded out an expansive journey with The Crusaders, demonstrating a deep appreciation for instrumental virtuosity and the enduring power of classic fusion.

Dr Fusion’s override show took a more streamlined, yet equally compelling, path into the heart of deep house. Kicking off with Jimpster and Crackazat’s "Natural Child - Dub," a track that immediately established a groove both intricate and effortless, the set maintained a consistent, understated energy. Stefano Guerra’s "Process of Change" unfolded with a delicate touch, leading into the atmospheric textures of Jen Meets Levent Canseven. It was a set that favored subtlety over bombast, with MATTERS UNKNOWN and Coflo’s "Yewnite (Radio Edit)" providing a sophisticated closing statement, proving that impact doesn't always require volume.

McMo’s session then ushered in a significant shift, leaning heavily into the melodic and progressive strains of house and techno. The set began with the emotive expanse of Adriatique and Marino Canal's "Home," a track that set the tone for a journey of sweeping soundscapes and thoughtful builds. Tracks like Ben Böhmer’s "Vale" and Nora En Pure’s "Infinite Memories" demonstrated a clear penchant for rich, atmospheric productions that unfold rather than explode. McMo crafted a narrative that built steadily, layering sonic textures through cuts like Simply City & Solis (US)'s "Tisno" and Dmitry Molosh’s "The Moon Lights the Way." The set culminated with the powerful, driving energy of Jark Prongo and Chocolate Puma's "Movin' Thru Your System" in the Hernan Cattaneo and Brigado Crew remix, a fittingly massive close to a set that traversed considerable emotional and rhythmic ground.

PJ’s show was a tight, impactful run through darker, more driving melodic and progressive sounds. Starting with Theologos’ "Love Ya," the set quickly intensified, with Cioz’s "A Way" providing a distinctive, almost tribal pulse. D-Formation and Alex Medina’s "We Used to Dance (Extended Mix)" continued the trajectory into a more commanding sound, building tension with precision. The set’s intensity peaked with Sian and Hiroko Yamamura’s "Attitude (Extended Mix)," a track that delivered a raw, uncompromising edge, leaving little doubt about the direction of the late-night air.

Finally, Electrovernacular delivered a no-nonsense, hard-hitting techno assault. Elise Massoni’s "Shedding Fade" offered a moment of atmospheric intensity before Border One ramped up the pressure with "Inner Radiance." The Advent’s "Dragon Man (Original Mix)" then slammed the door shut on the day’s broadcast, a classic piece of relentless, industrial-tinged techno that left no prisoners. It was a concise, brutal reminder of techno’s enduring power when delivered with unpretentious force.
