Slo Hans
It began in 1991 with a pair of SoundLab belt-drive decks and a Vestax PMC-05. Weekends were spent on crate-digging pilgrimages to Global Grooves, 3 Beat and Eastern Bloc. Around the same time, I started organising coach trips to the first incarnations of legendary nights like Renaissance, LuvDup and Hard Times, whilst becoming a regular at Cream during its incredible heyday at Nation. That obsession led to co-promoting my own midweek club night in Leeds with Ashley D called Shimmy—our attempt to recreate the weekend magic of Back to Basics, Up Yer Ronson and Vague. Massive respect to Dave Beer and Madam JoJo for showing us how it should be done. Next came a midweek residency at Ricci’s Bar in Liverpool, warming up for the likes of Yousef. More recently, it’s been a nomadic existence, playing parties around Manchester alongside fellow Point Blank host aDDiTaTe. Throughout it all, I’ve stayed close to the music—following it into different rooms, different cities and different chapters of life. More than three decades on, I’m still obsessed with digging for hidden gems and get genuinely giddy about discovering incredible new music. It’s also strongly rumoured that I still love a proper night out and can often be found in the middle of the dancefloor. I don’t believe in old or new music—only great music. If it speaks to the soul and moves the body, it goes in the bag My musical roots were firmly planted in the worlds of Masters At Work, Blaze, François K, David Morales, and Tony Humphries, before later falling under the spell of Ron Trent, Joe Claussell, Kerri Chandler and the deeper, more spiritual side of house music. In fact, one of my sons is named after the incomparable Louie Vega. Whilst the legends continue to throw it down, I’m equally inspired by artists such as Stefan Ringer, musclecars, J-Kriv, Toribio, Atjazz, Maurice Fulton, Cinthie, Osunlade, Coflo, CC:DISCO, Karizma, Izco, DJ Spinna, Fritz Wentink,Shy One, Gideön and Luke Solomon to name a handful , alongside amazing labels such as Freerange, Sacred Rhythm, Razor-N-Tape, Local Talk, Rhythm Section International, Wolf Music, Co-Op, Red Laser Records, Brighter Days, BBE, GAMM, Catelya, MATE and Running Back—to name just a few more. My two Point Blank shows provide me with the opportunity to indulge different dimensions of my musical passions. On alternate Tuesdays, The Deepness hones in on low-slung, jazz-leaning, and soulful vibes. The Friday evening mission on the Slo Hans Says Sessions is to deliver a joyful noise that fires the starter’s pistol on your weekend and is sourced from the full spectrum of incredible uplifting music I’ve been proud to be part of the Point Blank family since 2022, and I’m in it for the long haul. Still digging. Still playing. Still at it. Viva Point Blank.
